Ahead of the General Affairs Council (GAC) and Environment Council (ENVI) on 21 October, our Ministers were in Luxembourg to coordinate a strong, united and forward-looking position for liberals.

The GAC covered a range of liberal priorities, with discussions on European Democracy Shield, the Article 7 Procedure for Hungary and the upcoming EU budget, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028-2034.

For the ENVI Council, liberals positioned the EU as the driving force behind leading in climate action while also mastering a competitive economy. Preparations were made for the COP30 Climate Change Conference in November, as well as discussions on water resilience strategies.

ALDE Party Secretary General, Didrik de Schaetzen was in attendance alongside liberals including:

Xavier Bettel - Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Minister of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs (Demokratesch Partei, LU)

Marie Bjerre – Minister for European Affairs (Venstre, DK)

Diana Buzoianu – Minister for Environment (USR, RO)

Michael McGrath – European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection (Fianna Fail, IE)
