A run-off vote in Moscow would prove there is nothing to hide
ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson is backing calls for a re-run of the Moscow mayoral election after the Kremlin-backed candidate Sergei Sobyanin won by the smallest of margins.
Opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose candidacy is supported by ALDE Party member PDU, is refusing to recognise the outcome and has called for a run-off. He claims the result was falsified and the count marred by “serious violations”.
Sir Graham said; “There are widespread concerns about the health of democracy in Russia generally, and this election has highlighted this. If Mr Sobyanin is confident about the strength and legitimacy of his support, then he should agree to a run-off to dispel all rumours once and for all.”
