Ivan Skripnichenko, a civil activist and a member of Russian ALDE Party member YABLOKO, has sadly died from injuries sustained while he was volunteering to guard Boris Nemtsov's memorial in Moscow. Keen to play his part in preserving the memory of Boris Nemtsov, Mr Skripnichenko had been manning the memorial on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge on 15 August when he was attacked by an aggressive supporter of the current political regime.
The makeshift memorial at the site where Mr Nemtsov was murdered on 27 February 2015 has been frequently vandalized and its volunteer guardians intimidated. YABLOKO reports that criminal methods are becoming more and more popular as a means of direct and indirect suppression of dissidents in Russia.
Sergei Mitrokhin, former leader and now Chairman of the Moscow branch of YABLOKO, stated: "We express our deepest condolences to Ivan’s friends and next of kin and demand that the case must be investigated and the murderer must be brought to responsibility. Ivan Skripnichenko will forever remain among the heroes who gave their lives in the pursuance of their civil duty."
