Verhofstadt proposes names to complete EU sanctions list
ALDE Party candidate Guy Verhofstadt welcomed the conclusions of the European Council stating that the referendum held last weekend in Crimea was illegitimate. He welcomed the increased efforts to support the Ukrainian government but he believes that the current sanctions list is not enough to deter Russia.

Liberal leaders met in Brussels on 20 March
At the invitation of Sir Graham Watson MEP, President of the ALDE Party, liberal leaders will meet at the Cercle Lorraine in Brussels on 20 March, ahead of the European Council meeting. Discussions will focus on the #ivoteliberal European election campaign and the recent events in Ukraine.

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff asks EP President to step down
FDP and the other German parties in the European Parliament signed an open letter to the President of European Parliament calling for him to resign since the function requires non-partisanship, which Martin Schulz cannot guarantee as top candidate of the European Socialists.

Today in the European Parliament, Vice-President Lousewies van der Laan on behalf of the ALDE Party expressed support for the ILGA-Europe and ENAR appeal for a European election campaign free from discrimination and intolerance.

Thirteen candidates run in elections for Associate members steering committee
Thirteen candidates from across Europe are each running for one of the five seats on the new Associate individual members steering committee. Associate members will be able to vote in an online election at the start of April.

First-time candidates come to Brussels for a training seminar
On 14-15 March, the ALDE Party organised a training workshop for first time candidates in the European elections. A group of 20 politicians from different EU member states met to exchange views and experiences with fellow candidates, and ALDE Party Vice-Presidents Olle Schmidt and Alexander Graf Lambsdorff.

Two liberal MEPs win awards
At an award ceremony in Brussels, European Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn recognised MEPs for their outstanding work in the current legislature. Two liberals were among the winners: Andrew Duff for best use of social media and Chris Davies for his work in the field of the environment.

Last week, we started presenting on Twitter and Facebook our member parties contesting the European elections in May. The first party to be featured in this series was Sloboda a Solidarita from Slovakia.
