Prime Minister of Luxembourg speaks at Liberal Breakfast
The ALDE Party together with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Europe hosted a liberal breakfast with Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg. Currently holding the presidency of the Council of the EU, he reflected on the successes and drawbacks in the first two months of Luxembourg’s presidency.

Opposition parties in Russia face difficult conditions
On Sunday 13 September, regional elections were held in Russia with difficult conditions for opposition parties. ALDE Party member PARNAS was barred from contesting in all but one region and fell short of the threshold in that region, while our other member party YABLOKO won many mandates.

Venstre stays on course in Norwegian local elections
On Monday 14 September, Norway held local elections across the country. Support for Venstre, ALDE Party member in Norway, has remained stable, while the party has increased its voter base in cities such as Stavanger, Fredrikstadt, Tønsberg or Tromsø.

Boris Nemtsov is ALDE Group’s nominee for the Sakharov Prize
Boris Nemtsov, former co-chair of PARNAS, ALDE Party member, is one of the shortlist candidates for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize. Nemtsov, a Russian liberal reformer and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, was assassinated in February this year.

UK Yes campaigners urged to use emotion
Speaking to London-based diplomats on Wednesday 16 September, ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson reiterated a message he is sending to others campaigning to keep the UK in the EU: find compelling arguments which appeal to the hearts and not just to the heads of the voters.

MEPs strongly condemn the trial of Estonian police officer
Last week, the ALDE Group in the European Parliament voted in favour of a resolution to free all illegally detained citizens by the Russian Federation. The group has launched a social media campaign to show solidarity with Eston Kohver, the Estonian police officer jailed by Russian justice.

Individual members to elect congress delegates for Budapest
At this year’s ALDE Party Congress, to be held from 19-21 November in Budapest, two delegates will represent the European-wide individual members. Online elections will be held soon. Next week, every member that has paid their membership fee by 1 September will receive an invitation to vote.

EU shows its commitment to Ukraine by extending sanctions
Following the Council decision to extend the validity of sanctions over actions against Ukraine's territorial integrity, ALDE Party Vice President Hans van Baalen said: "As long as Putin supports the separatist violence in Eastern Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea, the sanctions must be prolonged.”

Commission launches European Mobility Week
With a view towards the Paris Climate Conference (COP 21), today the European Commission launches the annual European Mobility Week. This morning the EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, has officially opened the event in Brussels.
