The Netherlands takes over the EU Presidency
On 1 January the Netherlands, led by Mark Rutte, took over the EU presidency after a successful presidency held by Luxembourg, led by Xavier Bettel. The EU presidency work programme focuses on four key areas: migration and security, finances and the Eurozone, innovation and jobs, and climate and energy.
FDP hosts its annual Three Kings meeting
On 6 January ALDE Party member party in Germany FDP hosted its annual Three Kings meeting. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen said: "The ALDE Party supports and believes in the FDP's return to the German regional and national Parliaments. I see everywhere the FDP's new impetus."
Guy Verhofstadt condemns media law adopted by Polish government
The leader of the ALDE Group in the EP, Guy Verhofstadt, has condemned the recently-adopted media law by the conservative Law and Justice majority in the Polish Parliament, which gives to the Treasury Minister the authority to appoint senior figures in state-run radio and television.
New ALDE Party Bureau to meet for the first time
The new ALDE Party Bureau will meet for the first time on Thursday 7 January. During the meeting, the Bureau will discuss a common strategic outlook to set the ALDE Party priorities for the coming months as well as address topics such as applications for individual membership.
PACE President shares her wishes for the New Year
The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Anne Brasseur, shared her wishes for New Year: "In 2016, we should all be able to live in democracies where human rights and the principles of the rule of law are respected."
ALDE Group to host seminar on violent extremism
On Tuesday 12 January at the European Parliament, ALDE MEPs Sophie in 't Veld (D66) and Maite Pagazaurtundua Ruiz (UPyD) will host the first ALDE Group seminar of 2016 on building a counter-narrative to violent extremism.
