ALDE Group decision not to accept Movimento 5 Stelle is a wise one
Following the decision by the ALDE Group Bureau not to accept the request by the Five Star Movement to join the ALDE Group in the European Parliament, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP said: "M5S should move in a much more liberal direction before any membership of ALDE Group could be considered."

Guy Verhofstadt runs for European Parliament President
Guy Verhofstadt, who is currently the leader of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament and the EP's lead Brexit negotiator, has made official his candidacy to run for President of the European Parliament. MEPs will elect on 17 January their new President, who will serve until European elections in 2019.

Liberals form government in Iceland
ALDE Party member Björt framtíð (Bright Future) has agreed to form a coalition government in Iceland with centre-right Independence and Reform parties. The key highlight of the new formation is that Bright Future secured EU accession talks back on the table as part of coalition demands.

Annually on 6 January German FDP hosts its annual Three Kings meeting in Stuttgart. On New Year’s Eve, former European Commission Vice President and former Danish Venstre's Chairman Henning Christophersen passed away. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP said: "With the passing of Christophersen, the ALDE family has lost a committed European who always stood up for freedom.”

D66 celebrate its 50th anniversary
In 2016, D66 celebrated its 50th anniversary. Many activities took place across The Netherlands to pay homage to this milestone in the party history. The highlight was the Anniversary Convention at the end of October, which took place in exactly the same place where the very first D66 Congress was held.
