With Belgium announcing its Commissioner-designate earlier this morning, it can now be assumed the 2014-2019 European Commission will count five liberal Commissioners including two Vice Presidents.
- Andrus Ansip – Estonia
- Alenka Bratušek - Slovenia
- Cecilia Malmström – Sweden
- Margrethe Vestager – Denmark
- Věra Jourová – Czech Republic
An official announcement is expected from Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission, next week regarding the allocation of portfolios. Each Commissioner-designate will then be questioned by MEPs in a series of hearing at the European Parliament scheduled in the week commencing 4 October. The full line-up is then subject to a vote by the European Parliament before it can take office.
Commenting on the above, ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson said: “If confirmed, I will be pleased that once again Liberals will continue to be an important and driving force in the European Commission over the course of the next five years. It is no secret that we have a lot of very talented and very capable liberal women in our liberal family and it is pleasing that 80% (4/5) of our Commissioner-designates are women. The other European parties would do well to follow our example.”
