ALDE Party press release

President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe party Sir Graham Watson MEP today poured scorn on a resolution about Slovenia adopted at yesterday's EPP meeting. Reacting to the EPP statement, Sir Graham said:

'For the EPP to suggest that Slovenia is a banana republic simply because their own party there is no longer in office does a disservice to democracy. They question the rule of law because their own former Prime Minister was found guilty of clear wrongdoing; they lay the blame for economic difficulty at the feet of a party which has been in office only a few months; they call for the deployment of international observers in order to cast doubt about the integrity of Alenka Bratusek's government.

'Next they will be calling for the return of Berlusconi and Borissov and Sanader and Saakashvili and again arranging an ovation to Orban! This is party politics at its pettiest and Liberals will not react with like for like. At a time when economic hardship threatens the foundations of democracy in so many countries, the People's Party would be well advised to pursue a period of pensiveness about how it has performed these past fifteen years.

Alenka Bratusek and her government are having to clean up the mess they inherited from their EPP predecessors. They deserve a fair hearing.'
