At their executive council meeting earlier this afternoon, Pozitivna Slovenija, led by the current Prime Minister Alenka Bratušek, decided to apply for full membership of the ALDE Party.
A formal membership application will be submitted soon and will be presented to the ALDE Party Council, which will next meet which will next meet in Vienna, Austria on 2 May.
Sir Graham Watson, President of the ALDE Party, said: “I am delighted that Alenka Bratušek and Pozitivna Slovenija have decided to apply for membership of the ALDE Party and join the increasing number of parties within the European liberal family.”
“I am pleased that they have identified the ALDE Party as the best platform for them to influence policy and cooperate at a pan-European level.”
“Alenka Bratušek has participated in two of our pre-summit meetings in recent months and since becoming Prime Minister has shown strong determination and ability to lead Slovenia in these difficult times for Europe in general and her country in particular. She offers Slovenian people hope in the face of economic hardships.”
Dr Gregor Virant, leader of ALDE Party member Državljanska lista, said: "'the Civic List welcomes the decision of Alenka Bratušek’s Pozitivna Slovenija party to join the liberal family. This will further strengthen our efforts in pursuing liberal ideas, which are very much needed in Slovenia."
Guy Verhofstadt, Leader of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament said: "Liberals and Democrats are at the heart of Europe and its democratically elected Parliament where we play a decisive role in determining the balance of power between the extremes of left and right."
" The welcome addition of MEPs from Pozitivna Slovenija in the new Parliament to be elected at the end of May will further strengthen our ranks and increase our influence."
