ALDE Party press release

President of the ALDE Party, Sir Graham Watson, said: “I am deeply disturbed to learn of the attack on Aram Manukyan, the secretary of the Parliamentary Group of ALDE Party member in Armenia the Armenian National Congress, outside his own home this week that has put him in hospital.

Mr Manukyan is a highly-respected and vocal member of the opposition in Armenia. He has been an outspoken member of parliament over the years in ensuring the government is held accountable for its policies. Politicians should be able to carry out their duties without fear of being viciously attacked on their own doorstep. I am concerned that this may be another deplorable incident in a chain of attacks on members of the opposition this week and I urge the local authorities to deal with this matter with the utmost urgency.

European Liberals will continue to support our members throughout Europe, and I wish Mr Manukyan a speedy recovery.

Note to editors

Founded as Armenian National Movement in 1989, it was renamed to Armenian National Congress (Հայ Ազգային Կոնգրես, ANC) following the 2008 presidential bid of the ANM founding member and current ANC leader President Ter-Petrosyan. At the last parliamentary elections in May 2012, ANC gained 7 seats in the National Assembly of Armenia.

The Armenian National Congress has been a full member of the ALDE Party since March 2010.
