ALDE Party press release

Commenting on the latest developments in Macedonia, the ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen MEP said:

“I strongly condemn the violent storming of the Macedonian Parliament yesterday following the democratic election of a new speaker of the Parliament with support of majority of the democratically elected MPs.”

“Such acts of violence in the Parliament are wholly unacceptable and it is with profound regret to see that democratically elected representatives of the people - the MPs, especially their leaders Zoran Zaev and his coalition partner Zijadin Sela were targeted and wounded in the chaos.”

“It is such acts of violence that threaten Macedonian stability and unity. I urge a reduction in tensions in favour of calmness and rationality.”

“It has now been more than four months since Macedonian voters went to the polls (December) but they still unfortunately await the formation of their Parliament and Government which has been held up by VMRO-DPMNE and Nikola Gruevski’s belief that they still hold power in the country despite the opposition SDSM forming a ruling majority coalition.”

“I call on EPP, of which VMRO-DPMNE are members, to put all possible pressure on its Macedonian member party and its leader Gruevski to stop promoting demonstrations and accept that democracy must run its course.”

“I have already spoken with our Liberal Democrat friends in Macedonia and with leader Goran Milevski MP - who himself was subject to attacks and violence in the Parliament - to express my solidarity and reaffirm our support in their continued efforts to restore democracy in Macedonia.”
