European Liberal Democrats are deeply concerned at the current political situation in Macedonia and the allegations of wide-spread illegal surveillance of citizens, including civil society and journalists, and interference in the judiciary system, by the government of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.
These allegations raise serious issues such as the rule of law, fundamental rights and freedom of media. These are core values of any democratic society and are values that for liberals are non-negotiable and necessary for a functioning liberal-democratic society. These are also core values of the European Union to which, in our view, Macedonia should belong.
We call on all political actors in the country to act responsibly and cooperate with investigators to ensure that the content and substance of the allegations are fully and transparently investigated, with full regard for due process and the principle of presumption of innocence.
This investigation should be thorough and should be conducted immediately. We call on the government to allow an international and independent commission to investigate the allegations.
