45 years of liberal accomplishments

Today 26 March, the ALDE Party turns 45! In 1976 in Stuttgart, the European Liberal Democrats created a liberal political family which continues to be the main promoter of liberal values in Europe. Since then, our liberal family has grown and set out to achieve great things, including but not limited to:

  • In 1979, Simone Veil became the first female president of the European Parliament – an important step and our fight for supporting liberal women in politics continues with The Alliance Of Her
  • In 1990, we became a European political party – and now we are the third biggest European party with 71 member parties, 70 Members of the European Parliament, 6 European Commissioners, 6 Prime Ministers and 87 National Ministers
  • In 2011, we became pioneers and opened our party so people from all over Europe could voice their opinion and participate from our political project with the individual membership programme AIM for Europe

Today’s Europe is facing many challenges, from the COVID-19 crisis to climate emergency – but we are ready. For 45 more years of liberal accomplishments!
