ALDE campaign against Poland’s abortion ban collects close to 2,000 signatures

Last month, following the worrying news from Poland, ALDE Party launched a campaign against the country’s near-total ban on abortion. Liberals believe women should have full access to comprehensive and reproductive health and rights, and the Polish government has no right to regulate women’s bodies.

Close to 2,000 supporters signed our open letter to the Polish Parliament, thank you!

On 18 November, Polish MP Monika Rosa from ALDE Party member Nowoczesna presented the open letter, along with all signatures, to the Marshal of the Sejm (House of the Polish Parliament).

Thanks to your support, along with the hundreds of thousands who joined the protests, signed petitions or talked about the cause over social media, we have managed to temporarily stop the implementation of the court's decision which would outlaw almost all abortions in Poland.

Some weeks ago, representatives of ALDE in the European Parliament fought for and obtained a provisional agreement for a Rule of Law mechanism which ties respecting EU values to funding from the EU budget. This means that in the future illiberal parties will not be able to access EU funds if they do not respect our shared values of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

In response, the Polish government has announced its veto to the EU's next seven-year budget and COVID-19 recovery plan. This action is a continuation of a blackmailing campaign towards the EU and one more attempt to undermine democracy and further finance its corrupt power games.

The only way we can safeguard our freedoms is by being involved – one way to do this is by joining our ALDE Individual Membership programme.
