The Bureau of the ALDE Party welcomes the victory of its sister party Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the democratic Presidential elections in Taiwan held on Saturday 13 January, and congratulates Lai Ching-te on his election as President, and Hsiao Bi-khim as Vice President.
The ALDE Party is a longstanding supporter of Taiwan and has a longstanding engagement with President Tsai Ing-wen during her two terms in office, the Taiwanese government and partners. We look forward to continuing this close cooperation with President Lai and his Administration.
Through our engagement and high-level meetings, we have worked and are grateful to President Tsai, the Taiwanese government and civil society for their voluntary assistance to Ukraine and for their experience and knowledge-sharing during the Covid pandemic, and have called on Europe and Taiwan to work even closer together to respond to the challenge of authoritarian countries.
We remain strongly opposed to attempts by Beijing to a unilateral change of status quo in the Taiwan straits and believe the EU should intensify its support for Taiwan, including through high-level visits and increasing bilateral trade and investment on key areas, and for the Taiwanese people's right to make decisions on their own future.
The ALDE Party also created a new scholarship established in honour of late ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen, who was a staunch supporter of Taiwanese freedom and democracy.
