ALDE Party Bureau Statement to mark one year since Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine

On the 365th day of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the ALDE Party stands as resolutely with the Ukrainian people as we did on day one of Putin’s egregious war. We will continue to do so for as long it takes for Putin to end the hostilities and to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in full.

The ALDE Party continues to call for an immediate end to the unjustified violence, which has resulted in numerous war crimes, including attacks on civilian populations, summary executions, and other heinous acts.  We call for Russian troops to withdraw from all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. We urge our partners to maintain, and if required step up, their current military and financial support to the Ukrainian government and their people.

We will never forget the countless lives lost and we commemorate the sacrifice and extraordinary bravery of the Ukrainian people and the leadership of President Zelenskyy. Nothing compares to the sacrifices endured by the Ukrainian people, yet we applaud the solidarity shown by European citizens and their willingness to make the necessary economic sacrifices.

We are proud that our prime ministers, commissioners and national party leaders have been staunch supporters of Ukraine in Europe, urging tougher sanctions on Russia and more defense support for the Ukrainian freedom fighter. Our Co-presidents Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk have led several missions to Ukraine, showing our commitment to our Ukrainian allies. We will also continue to work with our Ukrainian member parties, in order to be a strong voice for Ukraine in Europe and the world.

European liberals remain committed to promoting democracy and human rights for all, including the people of Russia who have seen their own rights and fundamental freedoms suppressed even more in conjunction with Putin’s failed war efforts.

All wars end, and so too will this one. On this solemn occasion, we renew our call for a just peace on the terms prescribed by our Ukrainian allies.
