Commenting on the latest news on the American election, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen said:
“It is too close to call. The outcome of the US Presidential Elections cannot be predicted at this moment and the absentee vote will be decisive. There will not be a landslide victory for one of the candidates; it will be a narrow victory.”
“We urge President Trump to respect the wishes of the American citizens, whatever they may be, and trust that the US Constitution will be respected, and the final result pronounced only once all votes are counted and verified. We hope and expect that both candidates offer bipartisan cooperation with the candidate eventually declared as the next President of the United States. The same will be the case with the elections for both the House and the Senate. Whatever the outcome, we trust the American democratic process and look forward to work with our American counterparts.”
“For us as ALDE, close transatlantic relations are vital and we hope that the United States will return to bipartisanism, internationalism and multilateralism. We should work together with all nations of goodwill on democracy, human rights and civil liberties, climate and digital issues. Together, the EU and the US have to be tough on Russia and China which do not share our common democratic heritage.”
