On 28 November 2024, the de facto Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the suspension of the country's European Union accession process until the end of 2028. This decision has prompted massive protests in Tbilisi, Georgia. Police and special forces reacted with extreme violence against the crowds, leaving protesters injured. Journalists were targeted and beaten.
In response to recent developments, ALDE Party President Svenja Hahn said:
"Peaceful protesters are under attack in Georgia by the Georgian Dream regime who has chosen Putin’s authoritarianism over democracy. The EU cannot be silent. Liberals stand with the brave citizens of Georgia fighting for freedom, justice and a European future.”
European liberals stand in solidarity with the united opposition parties and the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, in condemning these acts of violence.
On 28 November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution rejecting the legitimacy of the recent Georgian parliamentary election results and calling for sanctions against key government figures, including Kobakhidze.
