With the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States and the historic election of Kamala Harris as the country’s first female Vice-President, ALDE Party welcomes the result and is committed to strengthening the EU-US relationship and transatlantic cooperation. Liberals across Europe look forward to these next four years as a period of reinforcing liberal values on both sides of the Atlantic.

Commenting on the election result, ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen said:

“The voters have spoken. Joe Biden will be soon inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States. The American people have re-connected with bipartisanism, inclusiveness and global responsibility. President-Elect Biden deserves our full support.”

“However, the Trump Presidency has been a wake-up call, and we cannot take our transatlantic relations for granted. We Europeans have to invest in our common defence, our trade community and our joint interests with the US. Additionally, the Biden Administration will not accept a ‘free-rider’ attitude. The European Union cannot, in its international relations, limit itself to the position of an honest broker. It should take sides with the United States against our common rivals such as Russia and China.”

“However, the US under Joe Biden will join us in fighting climate change, in investing in a circular economy and will lead in a digital revolution and the respect of civil liberties and human rights. Together, we can fight the Coronavirus pandemic and the economic depression and human suffering which has accompanied this unprecedented health crisis. The reinforced transatlantic community will work together with all nations of goodwill.”

“ALDE Party in the broadest sense and the liberal international community at large will offer its reinforced cooperation with the US Democrats in office but also will reach out to those classic Republicans who have always embraced bipartisan cooperation and internationalism and who are now liberated from their isolation.”
