Ahead of the first #SheDecides Day, on Friday 2 March the ALDE Group is stepping up efforts to support the global movement to guarantee the fundamental rights of girls and women to decide freely and for themselves about their sexual lives, including whether, when, with whom and how many children they have.
SheDecides was created as an immediate response to US President Donald Trump’s reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule, a policy which has devastating effects on women, girls and their communities around the world. The rule prevents NGOs outside the US from receiving money from the US government if they provide safe abortions or information about abortion. SheDecides is now a global movement to support the fundamental rights of girls and women to decide freely and for themselves about their sexual lives.
Since 2017 ALDE has called several times on Member States and the European Commission to fill the financing gap left by the United States. ALDE Party Vice President Angelika Mlinar MEP is joining prominent liberal politicians who are actively promoting and supporting SheDecides on the national stage, such as Sigrid Kaag (D66), Ulla Tornaeas (Venstre), Alexander De Croo (Open VLD), Marie-Claude Bibeau (Liberal Party Canada). Follow the European Parliament plenary live on Thursday 1 March for the statement of Nils Muiznieks, Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, presenting a comprehensive report on the lack of access to Sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) in EU Member States.
