Ciudadanos concludes refoundation with new leadership

Under the theme ‘Radically free’, Spanish ALDE Party member Ciudadanos held their General Assembly on 14-15 January to confirm the new leadership and political direction of the party.

Patricia Guasp, Ciudadanos Spokesperson in the regional parliament of the Balearic Islands, and Adrian Vázquez Lázara MEP, Ciudadanos delegation leader in the European Parliament, became the Political Spokesperson and Secretary General, respectively, after obtaining 53% of the vote in a primary process on 11-12 January. With this election, the party moves to a new leadership model with two leaders: a reinforced Secretary General, acting as leader of the organisation, and a Political Spokesperson.

Speaking at the event, ALDE Party Co-President Timmy Dooley stressed the need for a political party such as Ciudadanos in Spain:

“A political alternative that moves from the old politics of the left and right. A political alternative that makes people proud of their vote. A political alternative that seeks to unite, rather than divide. Spain deserves Ciudadanos as this alternative.”

Liberal Prime Ministers Mark Rutte and Alexander De Croo also shared messages of support for the new leadership at the Assembly.

The membership also voted in favour of new statutes, which define the party as liberal and progressive, and elected the new Executive Committees, formed by representatives from local, regional, European, and national levels.

Finally, the party presented a new brand identity and logo to represent a more modern organisation, looking to the citizen and future while acknowledging what has been achieved.
