Council meeting kicks off ALDE Party Congress

On 4 October, liberal members and delegates gathered for a Council meeting on the first day of the 2024 ALDE Party Congress in Estoril, Portugal.

Meeting for the first time since the ALDE Party Council in Vilnius in June, members adopted the draft budget for 2025 and discussed various items on the Council agenda including updates on membership fees, political projects and corporate engagement.

Council delegates also tasked the new ALDE Party Bureau, to be elected on 6 October, to present a proposal for a rule of law monitoring procedure for governments with participation of liberal parties by the next Council meeting.

Later in the day, the European Liberal Forum (ELF) celebrated the champions of liberal ideas with the 2024 Liberal Awards, where ALDE Party co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP was presented the “Liberal of the Year” award.

"My role as ALDE Party co-President is ending, but my fight for liberal democracy and human rights will continue," said co-President Kyuchyuk.

"This recognition is not only for myself, but also for so many people fighting and speaking out for liberal democracy in Bulgaria. You'll see us in the upcoming national elections, we'll come stronger in values but also in principles."

Meanwhile, Aleksandra Kot from ALDE Party member Nowoczesna in Poland won the “Rising Star” award after becoming the youngest Member of Parliament in Poland at the age of 24 earlier this year.

The ALDE Party Congress continues with various high-level political debates, thematic sessions and the Congress meeting on 6 October. Click here for the full programme.
