Last week, ALDE Party member D66 confirmed Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy as the party’s lead candidate for the European elections in 2024.
Around 5,100 D66 members took part in an internal election where Gerbrandy’s nomination was confirmed with around 56.6% the vote in the fourth round of voting.
“I am extremely honoured for the great support of the D66 members. The 2024 elections are very important. Sustainability is crucial for our planet and our economy. This requires a strong social-liberal voice in Europe. I will therefore dedicate myself wholeheartedly to a strong Europe that tackles these and other challenges,” said Gerbrandy.
Gerbrandy was twice elected a Member of the European Parliament in 2009 and 2014 for D66, and previously worked as a senior political advisor to the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
“Gerben-Jan has a great heart for the European ideal and brings 10 years of experience in the European Parliament. He therefore knows better than anyone what it takes to get to work for a strong, united and green Europe,” said D66 party leader Rob Jetten.
In 2017, Gerbrandy was named Greenest Politician in the Netherlands by Dutch nature conservation organisation Natuurmonumenten.
The Netherlands are set to hold snap parliamentary elections on 22 November, while the European elections in the country will take place on 6 June next year.
