Draghi report urges EU action on competitiveness

European liberals welcome the launch of Mario Draghi’s report entitled “The future of European competitiveness” and stress the need for immediate action by the new European Commission.

The former Italian Prime Minister and European Central Bank President outlined recommendations on how competitiveness can match the EU’s goals on decarbonisation, close the innovation gap with the US and China, and strengthen economic and military security.

Liberals do not want to compromise on European welfare, environment or freedoms, and call on the European Commission and EU Member States to act accordingly.

The European Parliament should scrutinise all candidates to the post of European Commissioners in light of the policy proposals made in this report and how do they consider acting in favour of competitiveness and economic integration.

Draghi’s calls follow a similar report by Enrico Letta on the European Single Market published last May, whose analysis was shared by our political family.

The EU set itself three main goals for the next decade: the enhanced integration of our foreign and security policy, enlarging the EU to the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova, and delivering the green and digital transition fairly.

The European Commission must give priority to the completion of the Single Market, private and public financing of innovation, economic security, and the upskilling and reskilling of the European workforce.
