EP hardens conditions for establishing political groups

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe fully supports the new conditionalities required for the formation of a political group in the European Parliament. Voted in plenary session in Brussels last week, this amendment of the Rules of Procedure of the European Parliament will enter into force during the next legislature.

The main concern was that the status of a political group should not be abused for the sole purpose of being able to benefit from the advantages and aids, both administrative and financial, offered by the Parliament. The plenary wanted to clarify whether their members actually share political affinities. The Rules of Procedure will thus now add to the list of criteria for the formation of a political group a political declaration that specifies the purpose of the group. Moreover, all the members of the group, in an attached written declaration, will have to express in a clear and unambiguous way that they share the same political affinity. Charles Goerens (Democratic Party, Luxembourg), ALDE spokesperson on this file in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs said: "In case the intentions of the elected members of this house are sincere, such a statement should not be an obstacle."
