EU needs to step up: Liberals react to US election results

On 5 November, the United States held elections to elect a new President and Vice-President as well as all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 34 of 100 seats in the Senate.

According to the Associated Press, Republican Party nominee Donald Trump has been elected as the 47th President of the United States.

“Now is Europe's hour! We must take the lead for security, economic growth and liberal democracy. The time for hoping and sitting out is over. Nothing less than the future of freedom and democracy is at stake,” said ALDE Party President Svenja Hahn.

Liberal leaders across Europe shared their reaction on social media as the election results trickled in across the 50 States.

"Now is not the time for arrogant comments across the Atlantic, but for diplomacy. In the EU, NATO and also in Berlin, we must now do our economic and security policy homework more urgently than ever,” said FDP leader Christian Lindner.

"Donald Trump has won the US election. He is to be congratulated. We will have to be a strong and confident partner and rely more on our own strengths as we face the major security and economic challenges and threats that are coming from Russia and China in particular," said Progresívne Slovensko leader Michal Šimečka.

"Congratulations to the United States for conducting this great democratic exercise successfully and untroubled, and to the winner Donald Trump. Europe should instead seize this election as an opportunity to take its destiny into its own hands with a genuine strategy of industrial, agricultural, military and energy autonomy, in perfect collaboration with our allies, including the USA,” said MR leader Georges-Louis Bouchez.

“American voters have spoken. Sweden's co-operation with the US will remain strong, just as it was under the previous Trump administration. That said, deeper European co-operation is needed now more than ever. Here, Sweden needs to take a leading role to ensure European security and a strong growth policy,” said Liberalerna leader Johan Pehrson.
