European Parliament elects its new President

Today, Members of the European Parliament elected in Strasbourg David Sassoli (S&D, Italy) as the new President of the European Parliament. Sassoli obtained the presidency in the second voting round with 345 out of a total of 751 votes. He will be chairing the house for the next 2.5 years.

Later this afternoon, the European Parliament will proceed to elect its 14 Vice-Presidents. From Renew Europe, Nicola Beer (FDP, Germany) and Dita Charanzová (ANO, Czech Republic) are expected to run for these positions, according to the agreement reached by the Group.
