François Decoster, President of the Renew Europe Group at the Committee of Regions asked the Czech government, on the eve of assuming the rotating presidency on 1 July, for support for Eduardo de Castro, President of Melilla, one of the two autonomous cities of Spain located in North Africa. Decoster also asked for support for the people of Melilla in the face of the recent tragedy and constant migratory pressure on the southern border of the EU. On 24 June more than 20 people were killed as about 2,000 people, mostly from sub-Sahara Africa, attempted to cross into one of the EU’s two land borders with Africa.
“The tragedy of Melilla on 24 June reminds us that it is indispensable to aid all cities and regions of Europe, no matter where these are situated, to deal with the migrations that often are human dramas. No Mayor should be left alone nor behind in facing these situations”, he declared.
