Field of expertise: climate, energy and nature and sustainability in general
From 1994 to 1998, Gerbrandy he was a personal assistant to D66's Doeke Eisma MEP. He then became international secretary of D66 and senior political advisor at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. Previously, he worked for the D66 parties in both the House of Representatives and the European Parliament.
As a Member of the European Parliament for D66 from 2009 to 2019, he became the first and only MEP ever to be awarded the Greenest Politician in the Netherlands award for his work on climate, energy, nature and sustainability.
Throughout his time in Parliament, he served on the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He served as committee vice-chair between 2012 and 2014, overseeing part of the negotiations on an EU ban on ‘invasive alien species’ that have a negative impact on the environment.
Between 2009 and 2014, Gerbrandy also served on the Committee on Budgetary Control. In this capacity, he drafted the committee’s opinion on the spending of the more than 30 agencies of the European Union in 2013.
He was also part of the European Parliament’s delegations to the 2014 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima; the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris; and the 2016 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Marrakesh.
In 2016, Gerbrandy joined the Committee of Inquiry into Emission Measurements in the Automotive Sector. That same year, he was appointed as Parliament rapporteur on national emissions reduction targets.
