Liberal International - ALDE Party Joint Statement on the ‘Election’ of the President of Georgia
On 16 July, Martin Hojsík MEP and Sophie Wilmès MEP were elected Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament for Renew Europe.
720 newly-elected MEPs gathered in Strasbourg, France, for the first Plenary session of the European Parliament following the European elections held last June.
Hojsík (393 votes) and Wilmès (371 votes) were elected respectively 7th and 10th Vice-Presidents of the tenth mandate of the European Parliament.
Hojsík, from ALDE Party member Progresívne Slovensko (PS) in Slovakia, also served as EP Vice-President in the previous mandate, having been elected by acclamation in October 2023 to replace PS leader Michal Šimečka.
He was elected to the European Parliament in 2019 for PS alongside Šimečka, but was previously known for his work as an activist and environmental expert.
Meanwhile, Wilmès was elected to the European Parliament in June as the lead candidate of ALDE Party member Mouvement Réformateur (MR) in Belgium.
She served as Belgium’s Prime Minister from 2019 to 2020 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2020 to 2022.
