Individual member is victim of Strasbourg attack

Last Tuesday, Strasbourg was the latest European city to be attacked by terrorists. Five people died in the gun attack on the festive Strasbourg Christmas market. While Liberals have always condemned terrorist attacks and shared our thoughts with all the victims of those horrendous attacks, we regret to inform our readers that one of ALDE Party’s individual members was among the victims. Antonio Megalizzi, a 29-year-old Italian journalist, was critically injured in the attack and his death was announced on Friday.

The Steering Committee of Individual Membership shared the following statement: “We were deeply saddened to hear about Antonio’s death this morning. Antonio is the fourth victim of a terrorist attack which took place in Strasbourg on 11 December. Antonio was covering the European Parliament plenary session for radio network Europhonica.”

“Antonio was also an individual member of the ALDE Party. Now more than ever, it is our duty to stop being afraid and react united against terrorist violence. Europe will survive and we will move on because we love our home, the way Antonio loved it.“

“Our thoughts are with those affected and the French people.”

Francesca Mercanti, former country coordinator of Individual Membership in Italy said: “Antonio liked to define himself a crazy guy in love with Europe. We laughed and we discussed about our European dream. He was a serious journalist aiming to give the real picture of our beloved European Union. We lost a friend, a colleague, a wonderful young man.”
