On 8 December, ALDE’s Portuguese member party Iniciativa Liberal held their third National Congress in Pombal, Portugal. During the Congress, a new leadership was elected, and a new global strategy motion “Juntos a Liberalizar” (Together to liberalize) was adopted. This strategy motion targets the young Portuguese and calls for a “more adult party without losing the youth and irreverence that will remain the essence of its identity”.
Following the resignation of Carlos Guimarães Pinto as the party’s leader at the end of October, João Cotrim Figueiredo will now take over the party’s leadership. Cotrim Figueiredo is the party’s first representative in the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic after the 2019 general elections.
During his speech, Cotrim Figueiredo highlighted the need for a liberal party such as Iniciativa Liberal in Portugal to fight against corruption, populism, and the all-controlling socialism, and to fight for fairer and lower taxes and freedom of choice.
