On 8 March, the world celebrates the International Women’s Day, recognising the social, political and economic achievements of women all over the world as well as highlighting gender equality.
The work on equal rights and opportunities for women across all sectors of society – including the political sphere – is still not complete. While progress has been made in Europe, women are still far behind when it comes to equal representation, both in national parliaments and in the EU.
In response to this, the ALDE Party launched the European Women’s Academy (EWA) in cooperation with ELF and FNF in 2016. The EWA is an elite training programme aimed at women running for office, designed to empower them with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue their career goals in elected positions. After three successful programmes, 58 women have graduated, many of which now hold elected office.
As liberals, we are committed to promoting gender equality and empowering women. For us, every day is Women’s Day. And our work is not done yet – stay tuned for our 2019 EWA programme!
