Final citizen recommendations for Europe’s future reflect liberal ideas

On Europe Day, the Conference on the Future of Europe came to an end with the presentation of 49 proposals and 320 measures to reform the EU. ALDE Party is delighted to see that many of our proposals and priorities such as climate change, economy, and European democracy, were reflected in the final recommendations.

Alliance makes historic gains, doubling seats in Northern Ireland Assembly

On 5 May, the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland continued to make history, recording their best election results and more than doubling their seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly. 17 Alliance MLAs will take up their seats in the 90-seat Stormont, with the party receiving a record 13.5% of first-preference votes and effectively becoming the third largest in Northern Ireland.

LibDems declare ‘turning point’ after local election success

In the local elections held in parts of England, Wales and Scotland on 5 May, liberals won more than 700 seats across the country, gaining some 200 seats, and regaining control of many local councils across the United Kingdom, including in seats where the sitting MP is a Conservative. Party leader Ed Davey declared the election a shockwave that will bring the Conservative government down.

Slovak liberals elect new leader

On 7 May, ALDE Party member Progresívne Slovensko held its first in-person Congress in two years. Delegates gathered in Bratislava to elect Vice-President of the European Parliament, Michal Šimečka MEP, as party leader. The Congress also focused on the upcoming elections, as 2024 will be a decisive year for Slovakia and Europe with both parliamentary and European elections.

Decoster: A strong Europe is needed, now more than ever

On 9 May, Europe Day, Renew Europe CoR President François Decoster attended the last meeting of the Conference on the Future of Europe in Strasbourg, France, with celebrations taking place in the context of the war in Ukraine. During his speech, he stressed how challenges faced at the EU’s creation are still relevant today.

Europe Day is an opportunity to continue working for the future of the EU

Renew Europe welcomes the final report on the Conference on the Future of Europe. Seventy-two years ago, Robert Schuman's declaration changed European history forever, introducing the prospect of unity and peace that had long been inconceivable. Today, more than ever, as war rages on the European continent, we must continue to develop and reform the EU in accordance with the will of citizens.

EU must prevent women and girls from suffering at the hands of Russian soldiers and traffickers

Women and girls constitute a majority of the eight million people who have fled Putin's invasion of Ukraine. In a resolution adopted last week by the European Parliament, Renew Europe calls for additional measures to secure the protection of these victims of the war. Renew Europe has also demanded that access to sexual reproductive health services be enabled everywhere in the EU and Ukraine.
