Liberals succeed in defending freedom in Georgia

Last week, the government of Georgia presented a law to restrict independent media and opposition organisations. ALDE Party members in Georgia took to the streets to protest and were brutalised by the police. Following the ALDE Party and Liberal International Presidents’ statement condemning the violence, the Georgian government vowed to withdraw the law and it was subsequently voted down by the Parliament.

Registrations open for the next ALDE Party Congress

The next ALDE Party Congress will take place on 26-28 May in Stockholm, Sweden. During the Congress, liberals from across Europe, including Prime Ministers, European Commissioners and party leaders, will gather to discuss and debate some of the defining challenges of our time. Registrations for delegations are now open and a draft programme is available on our website.

Economy and Finance ministers united on sound finances

On 14 March, ALDE Party and the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament hosted a meeting of liberal and centrist Ministers from across Europe ahead of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union. The meeting was chaired by Morten Løkkegaard MEP and focused heavily on debt regulation.

Join our upcoming event on the 2024 EU Elections

With the next EU elections only one year away, ALDE Party and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom will host an event to take stock of the current situation for European liberals and how they plan to address key challenges in the upcoming months. The event will take place on 21 March at 19:30 CET in Brussels, Belgium.

Liberals enter government in Cyprus

On 28 February, the new government of Cyprus led by President Nikos Christodoulides was sworn in. Cyprus’ new executive now includes a liberal Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment from DEPA, Petros Xenophontos. DEPA leader Marios Garoyian congratulated the new government.

Coming up: Our next event on sustainable packaging

Packaging accounts for over 40% of plastics and 50% of paper materials produced in the EU. On 28 March at 8:00 CEST, ALDE Party will host a Stakeholder event together with McDonalds, gathering experts from the private and public sector to discuss changes to EU legislation to address packaging and waste. The event will take place in Brussels and online.

The Alliance Of Her Academy goes to Vienna

The second session of the Alliance Of Her Academy 2023 Spring Class took place on 9-12 March in Vienna, Austria. In addition to an intense schedule of expert-led trainings on political leadership and strategy, the 22 participants were able to meet with alumnae and representatives from NEOS, ALDE Party member in Austria, as well as neighbouring liberals from Progresívne Slovensko in Slovakia.

Alliance calls for stable government to return in Northern Ireland

The Alliance Party of Northern Ireland Conference was held in Belfast on 4 March. It was their first Conference since becoming the third largest party in Northern Ireland, however its Assembly’s functioning has been blocked by the DUP, the largest Unionist party. During the Conference, leader Naomi Long insisted that reform is necessary to stop any one party denying Northern Ireland the government it needs.

Are you our next Communication Trainee?

The ALDE Party Secretariat is looking for a Communication Trainee to join the Communications and Press Unit. The successful candidate will have a front row seat to the inner workings of a political party and assist in the planning, creating and scheduling of social media and website content, among other things. Applications are open until 25 March.

Two years of ‘Letter from Brussels’: Renew Europe CoR podcast

This month, ‘Letter from Brussels’, the podcast of the Renew Europe Group in the Committee of the Regions, will celebrate its second anniversary. The podcast is written and narrated by Sean O’Curneen, Secretary General of Renew Europe CoR, a former journalist, and it appears after every CoR plenary, at least five times a year. Justyna Wydrzyńska sentence attacks women’s rights in EU

Renew Europe condemns the decision of the Polish judiciary to sentence women's rights defender Justyna Wydrzyńska to eight months of community service for providing abortion pills to a victim of domestic violence. The Group’s MEPs call for the sentence of Wydrzyńska to be overturned, as defending the fundamental right to access safe and legal abortion should never be a crime.

EU Electricity Market: Integration and flexibility needed

Renew Europe welcomed this week’s proposals by the European Commission on the EU internal electricity market design, which aims to tackle shortcomings of the EU energy market in the wake of the supply shock following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. As part of this reform, Renew Europe calls for more flexibility in the electricity grid and truly European, future-proof energy system integration.
