Today more than 2.5 million Ukrainians, most of them women and children, have left their homes and are now in another country. These people need housing, nourishment, and a way to carry on with their lives until the conflict is over. Liberals across Europe have risen to the challenge at the local and national levels and are leading the charge to provide the newcomers a good temporary home.

Ministers meet ahead of ECOFIN Council with focus on Ukraine

ALDE Party and Renew Europe Group hosted the 5th meeting of liberal ministers responsible for economics and finance ahead of the Council of the EU meeting on 15 March 2022. Participants discussed and shared views on the items on the Council agenda, with a specific focus on the economic and financial consequences of sanctions imposed on Russia due to its military aggression against Ukraine.

Join our 5th Hans van Baalen Town Hall on the Future of Europe

On 29 March from 8:30 to 10:00 CEST, ALDE Party will host our 5th Hans van Baalen Town Hall meeting in a hybrid format in Prague. The event will be co-hosted by ALDE Party's member party in the Czech Republic, ANO, and will address key issues including European security and defence, as well as the future of EU enlargement.

Liberal Democrats hold Spring Conference

The Liberal Democrats, one of ALDE Party member parties in the United Kingdom, held its annual Spring Conference on 11-13 March. The main focal point of the Conference was the party’s strong condemnation of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, with delegates adopting a motion on the subject, among other topics. ALDE Party was present at the event with a virtual exhibition booth.

NEOS shows solidarity with Ukraine at Federal Members’ rally

Austrian ALDE Party member NEOS (Das Neue Österreich) gathered for a Federal Members’ meeting on Saturday 12 March to address, among other issues, European security. In light of recent events, leader Beate Meinl-Reisinger expressed her party’s support with Ukraine and the people of Ukraine and shared the importance of renewed debate on a new European security architecture.

Alliance Party looks to deliver politics that work in the next elections

Two months ahead of the elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly on 5 May, the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland held their party congress in Belfast where party leader Naomi Long said this will be a chance for the voters to say no to "political soap operas" and deliver politics that works.

Renew Europe CoR presents Young Elected Politician programme 2022

The Renew Europe Group in the Committee of Regions has opened applications for the Young Elected Politician programme 2022. The programme offers an opportunity for young politicians holding a mandate at the local or regional level to exchange best practices, contribute to the work of the CoR, and to meet and discuss with CoR members and other local, regional, and European politicians. Apply before 8 April.

Renew Europe welcomes progress on Women on Boards Directive

After a decade-long wait, EU Member States have now adopted their position on the 'Women on Boards' Directive, legislation that seeks to make company boardrooms more gender-balanced. Renew Europe strongly welcomes this move and urges swift and devoted cooperation between the European Council and European Parliament to finally make this new legislation a reality.

Mexico: Government must act to protect journalists and human rights defenders

Renew Europe condemns the harassing and killing of human rights defenders and journalists in Mexico and calls on national authorities to investigate the killings. In an urgency resolution debated last week, the European Parliament called on Mexican authorities to eliminate impunity in these cases, to achieve a safe environment for the defence of human rights and safeguard independent journalism.
