Clarity and concrete proposals needed in Georgia, says ALDE President

On 16 March, the EU-Georgia Association Council was held in Brussels to talk about key areas of cooperation. With the mediation process starting between the opposition and government, ALDE President Hans van Baalen welcomes these developments but calls for more clarity for the Georgian people and the release of political prisoners.

German liberals win in state elections

On Sunday 16 March elections took place in the German states of Rheinland-Pfalz and Baden-Württemberg, with ALDE member Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP) winning 5,5% in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz, led by Daniela Schmitt, and 10,5% in Baden-Württemberg, led by Dr. Hans-Ulrich Rülke.

Yabloko deputy detained and Forum of Municipal Deputies disrupted

On 12 March, Sergei Mitrokhin, an elected member of the Yabloko faction in the Moscow City Duma, was detained and a separate meeting of more than 170 municipal deputies was interrupted by police during the weekend as intimidation efforts increase ahead of September’s scheduled Parliamentary elections in Russia.

Restoring democracy in Cambodia essential, panellists say

On 12 March, Liberal International organised a webinar to discuss the Cambodia Mass Trials with ALDE Party President and LI President of Honour Hans van Baalen, Svenja Hahn MEP (FDP, Germany) and Sam Rainsy, acting President of Cambodia National Rescue Party. The session was moderated by LI Vice-President Emil Kirjas.

Justice Ministers meet for the first time ahead of JHA Council

On 11 March, the ALDE Party and Renew Europe group hosted the first-ever Justice Pre-Council meeting, bringing together liberal Justice Ministers and the European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders.

Androulla Vassiliou joins new CoR high-level group

The European Committee of the Regions has established a new High-Level Group on Democracy to accompany its work on the Conference on the Future of Europe. Representing the Renew Europe Group is Androulla Vassiliou, former European Commissioner and former ELDR Vice-President (2001-2006).

Renew Europe CoR co-signs support for LGBTIQ freedom zone

The Renew Europe Group in the European Committee of the Regions supports the European Parliament Resolution on the declaration of the EU as an LGBTIQ Freedom Zone and commits to step up the European Committee of the Regions’ work to protect LGBTIQ rights and freedoms across cities and regions.

Rule of Law: Renew Europe cannot accept inaction

Democracy is under threat in the European Union but now the bloc has an instrument – the Rule of Law mechanism – at its disposal when a Member State does not respect its engagements and its citizens. The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament fought hard achieve this type of mechanism, and now it is time to start using it.

EU declared LGBTIQ Freedom Zone

On 11 March, on the initiative of Renew Europe, the European Parliament voted to declare the European Union a 'LGBTIQ Freedom Zone'. Renew Europe has put pressure on the Commission and the Council to act against any EU government discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Homophobia and transphobia do not have a place in Europe.
