Liberals discuss a stronger EU in the world

ALDE Party and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom hosted an event on 21 March to take stock of the current situation for liberals and how they plan to address key challenges ahead of the 2024 European Elections. The event was moderated by ALDE Party Vice-President Svenja Hahn MEP and focused on the EU’s role in the world, trade relations, enlargement, security and rule of law.

Agriculture and Fisheries ministers discuss support for trade

On 20 March, ALDE Party and the Renew Europe hosted a meeting of liberal and centrist Ministers from across Europe ahead of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council of the European Union. The meeting was chaired by Morten Løkkegaard MEP and focused heavily on the current market and trade situation for agriculture in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Liberalerna appoint Climate Committee

Last weekend, the executive board of Liberalerna appointed a Climate Committee at their National Assembly. The Committee is led by Swedish Minister for Climate and Environment Romina Pourmokhtari, and its mission is to develop the party’s climate policy. ALDE Party Vice-President Kira Rudik MP also shared remarks with the Assembly.

Liberal Democrats set out plan to rebuild UK-EU relationship

Over the weekend of 17-19 March, the Liberal Democrats held their Spring Conference in York, United Kingdom. During the Conference, leader Ed Davey insisted on the need to repair the UK’s trade relationship with the European Union. During the Conference, delegates also voted on a series of policy motions on social and health care, defence, immigration and energy.

You can still join our next event on sustainable packaging

Packaging accounts for over 40% of plastics and 50% of paper materials produced in the EU. On 28 March at 8:00 CEST, ALDE Party will host a Stakeholder Series event together with McDonalds, gathering experts from the private and public sectors to discuss changes to EU legislation to address packaging and waste. The event will take place in Brussels and online.

Are you our next Communication Trainee?

The ALDE Party Secretariat is looking for a Communication Trainee to join the Communications and Press Unit. The successful candidate will have a front row seat to the inner workings of a political party and assist in the planning, creating and scheduling of social media and website content, among other things. Applications are open until 25 March.

Renew Europe CoR shows support for abortion rights

Following the sentencing of women’s rights activist Justyna Wydrzyńska in Poland for helping another woman access abortion pills, the Renew Europe Group in the Committee of the Regions rallied behind her and the Simone Veil Pact for gender equality.

Renew Europe: Green transition must not rely on subsidies

Renew Europe welcomed last week’s announcements on the Net Zero Industry and the Critical Raw Materials Acts, calling for these proposals to be fast-tracked and at the centre of the European Parliament’s efforts for a secure and sustainable future. However, subsidising industry is not a long-term solution and must not endanger the level playing field of the Single Market, the Group warns.

EU moves forward on joint arms procurement

Renew Europe calls on the European Council to back the agreement reached by EU defence ministers on the immediate transfer of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, including through joint procurement by Member States. This has been requested as a matter of urgency by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Renew Europe believes that additional military support for Kyiv is essential for European security.
