Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, voter turnout in last week’s elections in the Netherlands was nearly 3% higher than in the 2017 elections. ALDE Party members VVD, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and D66, led by Sigrid Kaag, gained 34 and 24 seats respectively.

The ALDE Party condemns in the strongest terms the blacklisting of ALDE Party Vice President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP by China today in direct disproportionate response to the EU issuing sanctions on four individuals over serious human rights violations against the Uighur minority.

ALDE President appointed to advise Dutch government and parliament on peace and security

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen was appointed on 20 March by the Dutch Council of Ministers to the Advisory Council on International Affairs, where he will chair the Peace and Security Committee. The appointment will take effect on 1 April 2021.

Liberal Commissioners present initiative to restore free movement

Last week, European Commissioners Didier Reynders and Thierry Breton unveiled an initiative to facilitate the free movement inside the European Union given the COVID-19 pandemic: the Digital Green Certificate. This initiative evolves around key principles, such as accessibility, security and privacy.

Environment Ministers meet for the first time ahead of ENVI Council

On 17 March, liberal Environment Ministers and European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, met for the first-ever Environment Ministerial meeting ahead of the ENVI Council, hosted by the ALDE Party and Renew Europe group. The meeting was chaired by Dominique Riquet (MRSL, France) and Iskra Mihaylova (MRF, Bulgaria) MEPs.

FDP delegates elect leader Lindner to top federal election list spot

Delegates of FDP in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia have elected their state list for the federal election at the weekend with 96.9% choosing party leader Christian Lindner as their top candidate. ALDE Party Vice President and current MP Alexander Graf Lambsdorff was selected in the third spot on the list.

Parnas Congress calls for opposition unity ahead of elections

Mikhail Kasyanov was re-elected chairman of the Parnas party, ALDE Party member in Russia, as the Party convened its Congress over the weekend in Moscow. The Congress also adopted a Manifesto on the programmatic principles and values of the party.
