Liberal voices will not be silenced in Hungary: “We stay here and keep going!”

On 3 April, six opposition parties joined forces for the Hungarian elections in an alliance including ALDE Party members Momentum Mozgalom and Liberálisok. The alliance won 28.14% of the votes and Momentum got 11 members of Parliament elected, representing 5.53% of parliamentary seats. Even though Fidesz and its allies won an absolute majority, the new liberal members of parliament are ready to keep up the fight for freedom and democracy in Hungary.

Ministers meet ahead of ECOFIN Council with focus on harder sanctions against Russia

On 5 April, ALDE Party and Renew Europe hosted the 6th meeting of liberal ministers responsible for economics and finance ahead of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council. The meeting was chaired by Luis Garicano MEP in Luxembourg, where participants discussed items on the Council agenda, such as hardening of sanctions against Russia, the OECD corporate income tax agreement and the SPA/NL agreement on Euro governance.

Liberal education and culture ministers discuss the future of European youth ahead of EYCS Council

ALDE Party and Renew Europe Group hosted the first ever meeting of liberal ministers responsible for education, youth, culture and sport ahead of the EYCS Council on 5 April. The meeting was chaired by Katalin Cseh MEP in Luxembourg. The participants discussed and shared views on the items on the EYCS Council agenda, such as crisis management in the field of education and youth mobility.

Liberal Breakfast focuses on the future of EU-Hungary relations after the election

On 5 April, ALDE Party and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) hosted a Liberal Breakfast on the Hungarian election results. Dániel Berg, ALDE Party Vice-President and Deputy Mayor of Budapest 2nd District, and Bálint Gyévai, LYMEC Secretary General, shared their insights and perspectives on the election results as well as their impact in the relations between Hungary and the European Union.

Liberal Commissioners ban greenwashing and push for more durable consumer products

The European Commission takes the next step to improve consumer protection and fostering a greener European future. Vice-President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová and Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders presented their initiative, which will improve durability of products and ban greenwashing practices.

Adam Szłapka re-elected chair of Nowoczesna

With the support of 174 delegates, Adam Szłapka MP was re-elected chair of Nowoczesna, ALDE Party member party in Poland, during a party Congress held in Warsaw on 2 April. ALDE Party acting Co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP also addressed the Congress last weekend thanking Polish citizens for an extraordinary effort in welcoming 1.5 million refugees from Ukraine.

6th Hans van Baalen Town Hall meeting held in Poland

The 6th Hans van Baalen Town Hall meeting on the future of Europe took place on 1 April in Warsaw, Poland, hosted by ALDE Party member Nowoczesna. The ALDE Party acting Co-Presidents were joined by Lithuanian Minister of Justice Evelina Dobrovolska and other esteemed panellists, discussing ideas for Europe’s future with over 150 citizens at the event.

The Alliance Of Her Academy Class of 2022 continues to impress and inspire

Over the weekend of 31 March – 3 April, The Alliance Of Her 2022 Academy continued with the launch of its open class, formed by incredibly impressive and talented women from around Europe. Participants met for the first time at the home of the academy – the Domaine de Ronchinne in Belgium. The session counted with the involvement of Belgian Secretary of State for Budget and Consumer protection, Eva De Bleeker.

Last chance to join Renew Europe CoR’s Young Elected Politician programme 2022

The Renew Europe Group in the Committee of Regions will close applications for the Young Elected Politician programme 2022 on 8 April. The YEP programme and its online platform offers an opportunity to young politicians with a mandate at a local or regional level to network, exchange best practices, obtain information on EU legislation and EU funding opportunities, contribute to the work of the CoR, and to meet and discuss debate with CoR members and other local, regional, and European politicians.

Renew Europe supports steps to end Russian oligarchs’ money laundering

Renew Europe welcomes the recent adoption of the revised transfer of funds regulation, which will reinforce anti-money laundering measures and put in place a stronger regulatory framework for crypto assets. Reports suggest that anonymous crypto asset transfers are being used by Russians linked to Putin’s regime to circumvent sanctions, and the EU anti-money laundering frameworks must be adapted to current challenges.

EU must secure stable future for fishing post-Brexit

The implications of Brexit for the fishing sector are not yet fully known. The only certainty: access for EU fishers to British waters has been reduced. However, terms of the trade and cooperation agreement are generally respected. Renew Europe favours good neighbourly relations with the United Kingdom, while being intransigent on the level of protection of the interests of EU fishers.
