Kaja Kallas leads new government in Estonia

This week, a new government took office in Estonia led by Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. ALDE Party member Reformierakond holds a total of seven ministerial positions out of 13 in the government, with portfolios such as finance, defence, justice and more. Priorities for the new government include legalising same-sex marriage, tax reform, ensuring investment in defence and strengthening the Estonian language, among others.

Vestager presents Digital Skills package

The European Commission has adopted two proposals to support digital education and develop citizens’ digital skills in the context of the European Year of Skills, as challenges remain to ensure quality digital training for all Europeans. For liberals, these proposals are timely and necessary to equip citizens and businesses with skills to drive economic growth and improve quality of life in the EU.

Venstre sets out election promises

On 15-16 April, members of Venstre, ALDE Party member in Norway, came together for a party conference ahead of local and regional elections later this year. During the event, leader Guri Melby spoke on priorities such as the green transition, EU-Norway cooperation and geopolitical challenges. Party members agreed on election promises covering public transport, environment, education and public services.

ELF welcomes new Executive Director

Earlier this month, European Liberal Forum, the political foundation of ALDE Party, welcomed Alva Finn as new Executive Director. Originally from Ireland, she brings twelve years of experience in policy at the EU, UN and national levels to the organsation. The European liberal family wishes her a warm welcome!

Renew Europe CoR member joins Estonian government

Following elections in March, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas renewed her mandate to lead Estonia. One of her new Ministers is Renew Europe in the European Committee of the Regions member Mart Võrklaev, who took office as Finance Minister on 17 April. During his tenure in the Committee of the Regions, Võrklaev worked on telecommunications legislation and boosting broadband connectivity.

Renew Europe CoR: Council paralysis costs 33% of EU GDP

Despite decades of European integration, legal and administrative obstacles in border areas between EU Member States continue to exist and come at a high cost. Magali Altounian, Deputy Mayor of Nice, France and European Committee of the Regions rapporteur on the opinion European Cross-Border Mechanism 2.0, raised key issues on this topic during the recent Life in Border Regions conference.

China: EU must defend human rights and democratic values

Renew Europe reiterated its call for the EU to set foundations for a firm new strategy on China, based on dialogue when it comes to global challenges like climate change, while raising concerns over human rights. EU diplomatic, scientific, economic and cultural ties with Beijing are essential, but a new approach is needed to defend EU values and be treated as an equal partner.

Renew Europe calls for safeguarding rule of law in Greece

Two years have passed since the murder of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz. A champion of media freedom in Europe, Renew Europe has called upon the Greek authorities to resolve the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice, as this unresolved murder casts a heavy shadow on media workers. A Media Freedom Act that will guarantee media pluralism and independence is urgently needed in Europe.
