Liberals united in condemnation for Non-paper on Western Balkans

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen has condemned the ‘Non-paper on Western Balkans’ that has emerged and been published by Slovenian media outlets in which the idea of redrawing international borders in the region was entertained. ALDE Party Vice President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP has also expressed his concern, saying this non-paper will undermine stability and peace of the region.

ALDE President: Russian involvement in 2014 terrorist attack must be condemned

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen strongly condemns the Russian involvement in the 2014 terrorist attack in the Czech Republic, claiming the lives of two people. It has recently been reported that the Russian GRU intelligence service was involved in the case. President van Baalen calls for the European Union to stand without reservation and in unity with the Czech Republic. On the situation in Eastern Ukraine, President van Baalen has also called for all EU leaders to support the efforts led by France and Germany through the Normandy Process.

Europe’s liberals push for Spain to withdraw judiciary reform

On 21 April, the Spanish government announced the withdrawal of the controversial reform to the Spanish General Council of the Judiciary. The decision comes after active and tireless work by Europe’s liberals, including European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová and Commissioner Didier Reynders as well as the representatives of Spanish ALDE member Ciudadanos, led by ALDE Party Vice-President Luis Garicano.

EU leaders to support efforts led by France and Germany, ALDE President urges

Earlier this month, ALDE President Hans van Baalen issued a statement on the situation in Eastern Ukraine. He has also called for all EU leaders to support the efforts led by France and Germany through the Normandy Process, involve the UK and the US in the discussions and consider imposing further sanctions on Russia.

ALDE PACE released a statement on 20 April expressing concern on the escalating situation in Eastern Ukraine. The statement was issued ahead of President Vladimir Putin’s annual address at the Federal Assembly. ALDE PACE has outlined four key messages on the situation.

First-ever Stakeholder Series event focuses on intersection between AI and automated driving

On 14 April, the ALDE Party partnered with Hyundai to discuss how AI and automated driving go hand-in-hand and how policymakers can work together with industry experts to make this technology work for Europe. The panellists sharing their insights on this topic were ALDE Party Vice-President Dita Charanzová MEP, José Ramón Bauzá Díaz MEP and Edvin Eriksen, Head of Office for Hyundai’s Berlin Cradle location.

On 19 April, the co-chairs of the Conference on the Future of Europe launched the citizens’ digital platform which gives Europeans the opportunity to join the debate on the future of Europe, ahead of the formal launch of the Conference on 9 May.

Renew Europe condemns Polish Constitutional Court dismissal of Ombudsman

The Renew Europe Group strongly condemns the decision by the Polish Constitutional Court to remove Adam Bodnar from his post as Polish Ombudsman for Citizens Rights and demands that the European Commission take immediate action.
