Liberals welcome President Macron’s victory

On Sunday 24 April, French citizens headed to the polls for the second round of the Presidential election, and elected Emmanuel Macron for a second term in a victory for centrist, liberal, pro-European politics over the forces of populism. His re-election was welcomed across Europe and especially within the liberal political family.

ALDE’s Conference on Europe’s future takes place in The Hague

To mark the end of ALDE Party’s Action Plan on the Future of Europe and ahead of the last COFOE-dedicated plenary debate, ALDE Party, in collaboration VVD, organised a day-long conference to discuss all the inputs gathered throughout the Action Plan, particularly at the Hans van Baalen Town Hall meetings and through the digital hub, with a line-up of distinguished speakers.

Slovenians vote for change in historic numbers

Heading to the ballot boxes in record numbers, voters in Slovenia spoke loudly and voted for change last Sunday, giving the Freedom Movement led by Dr. Robert Golob a majority in Parliament and paving the way for a new coalition government to be formed, ousting Prime Minister Janez Janša. Coalition talks are expected to begin this week.

Liberals lead the 'EU meets the Balkans' Forum

In collaboration with the ALDE Party and the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, the European Liberal Forum held a conference on the European integration of the Western Balkans on 26 April. The focus of the conference was to discuss lessons learned from Ukraine, and whether EU enlargement in the Western Balkans can serve as an antidote to war.

FDP holds 73rd Party Congress

Last week, German ALDE Party member Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP) organised the first Federal Party Congress since FDP entered the federal government as part of the “traffic light” coalition. During the Congress, German liberals elected a new Secretary General for the party and highlighted their compromise in supporting Ukraine militarily and to become independent from Russia’s energy fuels and raw materials.

Open VLD hosts “Liberal Fire” Congress

On 23 April, Flemish liberals gathered in Ghent for the first of four congresses to chart the course of the party’s future. The theme of the day was “Stronger democracy and a more efficient country”. Attendees put forward a series of policy positions, such as a one-stop shop for all contacts with the government for all citizens.

ALDE Party welcomes new Liberalerna leader Johan Pehrson

On 8 April, ALDE Party member Liberalerna, welcomed a new leader, Johan Pehrson. He has been a Member of Sweden’s Parliament since 2018, representing Örebro County, and previously represented the same constituency from 1998 to 2015. He became a member of the Liberal People's Party in 1985 with a previous background in the Liberal Youth of Sweden.

Renew Europe CoR to discuss humanitarian response with Ukrainian leaders

During the European Committee of the Regions plenary on 27-28 April, Ukrainian local leaders from Kyiv, Lviv, Mariupol and Melitopol join local and regional EU leaders, such as Renew Europe in the Committee of the Regions President François Decoster and Vice-President Ulrika Landergren to discuss the current situation facing their cities.

Historic election results in France and Slovenia are chance to make Europe stronger

Following the elections in France and Slovenia on 24 April, Renew Europe congratulated President Emmanuel Macron, for his historic victory Marine Le Pen and expressed relief at the departure of right-wing populist Janez Janša in Slovenia. It's time for pro-Europeans to unite and continue to renew our Union so it can deliver for citizens in changing times!

Digital Services Act: Deal ensures big tech players "cannot act as independent digital islands"

Renew Europe welcomed last week’s deal on the Digital Services Act, a binding EU-wide set of obligations applicable to all digital services. One of Renew Europe’s priorities was to defend the freedom and openness of the internet for all users and businesses, while improving citizens’ online rights and safety, and fought for a fairer internet where fundamental rights are respected.
