Vestager: With new rules on AI, the EU spearheads development of global norms

Last week, the European Commission unveiled a package of rules on Artificial Intelligence aimed at addressing the risks of the new technology while positioning Europe as a global leader in the sector. The initiative, overseen by European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager and supported by Commissioner Thierry Breton, expands on the strategy to shape Europe’s digital future presented in February 2020.

DP holds digital congress with a focus on recovery

On 26 April, ALDE Party member Demokratesch Partei (DP) in Luxembourg held a digital congress with a focus on themes such as digitalisation, teleworking and recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, among others. Party leader Corinne Cahen and Prime Minister Xavier Bettel both delivered speeches at the Congress, taking stock of the measures during this past year but also looking for future and what can be learned from this crisis.

Venstre in Norway holds congress ahead of parliamentary elections

ALDE Party member Venstre in Norway held a digital congress from 23 to 25 April, ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled to take place in September this year. One of the focal points of the congress was the party’s electoral programme.

Three Liberals become national ambassadors for climate neutrality

The Covenant of Mayors, the world’s largest movement of cities and regions delivering climate and energy action, has launched a new Chamber of National Ambassadors which consists of 27 members of the European Committee of the Regions, one for each EU Member State. The ambassadors from the Renew Europe CoR are Robert Van Asten (The Netherlands), Gunārs Ansiņš (Latvia) and Andres Jaadla (Estonia).

Agriculture Ministers meet ahead of AGRIFISH Council

On 26 April, the ALDE Party and Renew Europe group hosted the 11th AGRIFISH Ministerial meeting in Brussels, bringing together the Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers of our political family. The meeting was chaired by Renew Europe MEP Iskra Mihaylova (MRF, Bulgaria).

LYMEC adopts a range of key resolutions during the 2021 Online Spring Congress

LYMEC hosted its second digital Spring Congress on 23-24 April, with delegates from more than 62 European youth organisations coming together to adopt 15 resolutions on civil rights in Ukraine, democracy in Belarus, vaccination policies, and more. The Congress opened with speeches from liberal leaders such as ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen, ELF President Hilde Vautmans MEP, Renew Europe President Dacian Cioloş and Former European Commissioner Cecilia Malmström.

New EU fund to facilitate green transition in public sector

On 26 April, the European Parliament and European Council agreed on a new fund, the Public Sector Loan Facility. This fund will help kick-start the green transition in Europe and support its success, by ensuring that promising projects in all sectors are paired with investments and funding to contribute to a greener future.

Renew Europe welcomes adoption of Horizon Europe

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomed the European Parliament’s adoption of Horizon Europe on 27 April, which succeeds Horizon 2020 and spans from 2021 until 2027.
