With an unprecedented year behind us and many challenges still to come, the core of the work for Europe’s liberals in 2021 will consist of the continued fight for freedom, liberty, individuality, progress and solidarity for a more open, fair, progressive and free Europe.

Liberal leaders condemn attacks on Capitol Hill

Europe’s liberals have reacted strongly to last week’s unprecedented events in Washington, condemning any attacks against the democratic will of the people. ALDE President Hans van Baalen and other liberal leaders have called for a peaceful transition of power and reaffirmed their commitment for democracy.

Liberal ministers take office in Romania

Seven liberal ministers, including USR party leader Dan Barna as Vice Premier Minister, have taken office following the country's parliamentary elections in December. ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen congratulates the new liberal ministers and wishes them success in their roles.

Elections held in Mostar with Naša Stranka VP winning election

Local elections were finally held in Mostar on 20 December 2020, 12 years since they were last held in the city, with ALDE party member Naša Stranka winning mandates and entering the local council. Irma Baralija, a local teacher and Vice-President of Naša Stranka, fought for many years for her right to vote and to run in a municipal election.

FDP hosts digital Three Kings Meeting

On 6 January, ALDE Party member Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Germany held their annual Three Kings Meeting, this year in a digital format for the first time. In his speech, party leader Christian Lindner focused on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, addressing recent government measures to prevent the spread of the virus and plans for mass vaccination ahead.

Radikale meets for New Year’s Convention online

On 9 January, ALDE Party member Radikale Venstre in Denmark organised a virtual New Year’s Convention under the theme ‘Welfare under pressure’, with panel discussions centring around the welfare state’s core challenges, green transition, and more. European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager also delivered a message, which focused on the future of European welfare.

MR pledge closer ties with OpenVLD and a renewed fight against populism

On the occasion of the traditional new years wishes, Georges-Louis Bouchez, the leader of Mouvement Reformateur, ALDE member party in Belgium, declared a year of renewed fight against populism and pledged even closer collaboration and a series of joint events with sister party OpenVLD to be organised as part of its 175th anniversary celebrations.
