Security and defence at the centre of SFP congress

On 21-22 May, ALDE Party member SFP held its annual Congress in Turku, Finland. The event focused on the country’s present and future challenges, especially related to security and defence. ALDE Party acting co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP gave a speech focused on Finland’s application for NATO membership, praising the work of party leader Anna-Maja Henriksson.

Open VLD congress aims to reshape economy

ALDE Party member Open VLD (Belgium) voted for a negative income tax, better activation of unemployed people and the removal of registration fees for young families at their second ‘Liberal Fire’ congress. The party adopted these and other resolutions at the event, themed “Progress in a modern economy”, on Saturday 21 May.

Liberals support Finnish and Swedish decision to join NATO

In an event last week, Venstre Norway leader Guri Melby and Rasmussen Global CEO Fabrice Pothier highlighted their support for Finnish and Swedish membership of NATO. This lively discussion on European security and the Nordic countries was hosted in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Europe.

Liberals stand with LGBTQIA+ community at Belgian Pride

On Saturday 21 May, liberals from Belgium and across Europe came together for Belgian Pride. During the event, thousands of participants and volunteers came out to show their support for the LGBTQIA+ community in a Pride parade and celebration in the streets of Brussels. This year’s Pride comes at a critical time, as despite recent gains, the fight for equality is far from over.

Liberalų Sąjūdis presents new visual identity

Over the weekend, one of ALDE Party’s member parties in Lithuania, Liberalų Sąjūdis (Liberal Movement), presented its new visual identity during a party Congress in Vilnius. The new visual identity represents the development of the party over the years, and ALDE Party acting co-President Senator Timmy Dooley applauded the party for its values and role during the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Young liberals elect new leadership at LYMEC Congress

European liberal youth are gearing up for the European elections in 2024. To take on that mission, young liberals voted for the team that would lead them for the next two years at last weekend’s European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) Congress in Prague, Czech Republic. Best of luck to the new Bureau!

Renew Europe: All war crimes committed in Ukraine must be prosecuted

Renew Europe strongly condemns the illegal and unjustified Russian aggression against Ukraine and the grave violations of human rights and laws of war by Russian troops. In a resolution on the fight against impunity of war crimes in Ukraine approved last week, Renew Europe insisted on the importance of collection of evidence in these cases to ensure all war crimes committed in Ukraine are prosecuted.

European Council delay in opening accession negotiations with North Macedonia damages EU’s reputation

Renew Europe regrets the continued lack of unity in the European Council on opening accession negotiations with North Macedonia, despite Skopje’s commitment to democracy, rule of law and efforts to implement EU-related reforms. In the annual progress report on North Macedonia adopted last week, the European Parliament reiterates support for the opening of accession talks and welcomes the democratic transition of North Macedonia.
