The first-ever virtual ALDE Congress will take place next week, on 11-12 June 2021. Held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Congress is an opportunity for member party delegates, Prime Ministers, party leaders, European Commissioners and decision-makers from our member parties across Europe to come together to discuss and debate some of the defining challenges of our time.

Centralists return to Parliament in Cyprus as DEPA wins 4 seats in elections

ALDE Party member Democratic Alignment (DEPA) in Cyprus won 6.1% of the vote securing four seats in the next Parliament. Party Leader Marios Garoyian welcomed the results and stated that they prove the value of the party to address the need to revitalise the center in Cypriot and that the party will work to turn abstention into a creative change in Cyprus.

Croatia local elections: Liberal candidate wins the mayoral race in Split

Ivica Puljak, the candidate of ALDE Party member Centar for the Mayor of Split, successfully won election with 56.7% of the vote in the second round on 31 May. Elsewhere in Croatia, ALDE member parties Istarski demokratski sabor (IDS), Hrvatska socijalno-liberalna stranka (HSLS) and Hrvatska narodna stranka - liberalni demokrati (HNS) also fought local campaigns and achieved some notable victories.

SFP holds Congress ahead of local elections

At its virtual congress on 29-30 May, just two weeks from the country’s local elections, Svenska Folkpartiet (SFP) in Finland renewed the mandate of Anna-Maja Henriksson as the party’s leader. During the Congress the importance of EU membership and European cooperation were discussed, in addition to a range of national and local topics.

UDI re-elect Lagarde as leader; look ahead to 2022

The Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI), ALDE Party member in France, held a virtual Congress on 29 May. The party re-elected Jean-Christophe Lagarde as President and in his acceptance speech, Lagarde emphasised the need to defend the European model and to build shared independence.

Jourová: Protecting democratic information space is crucial

On 26 May, European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová and Commissioner Thierry Breton published a Guidance on Strengthening the Code of Practice on Disinformation which forms a part of Europe’s digital strategy. The Guidance reinforces the existing Code of Practice in different areas and addresses the rapid spread of disinformation, calling for a stronger commitment from the signatories to prevent it while preserving the freedom of speech and democratic values.

First meeting of ALDE Competitiveness Ministers

The ALDE Party and Renew Europe group hosted the first meeting of liberal competitiveness ministers on 27 May. The Ministers discussed and shared views on the items on the European Council agenda, with a specific focus on the new and updated EU industrial strategy and the Digital Services package. They also discussed the EU re-opening strategy and the future of tourism in Europe.

This event will focus on how responsible data sharing within the context of the EU’s Data Governance Act can be used to create a more enabling environment for those who wish to share data which will deepen the Digital Single Market and advance Europe’s digital goals and global competitiveness.

Stakeholder Series event discusses future of work

Last week, the ALDE Party co-hosted a Stakeholder Series event on the Future of Work and online platforms together with Uber. Panelists Sylvie Brunet MEP, Dragoș Pîslaru MEP, Jovana Karanovic and Joanne Kubba focused on how digital services, such as online platforms, can support the EU's post-COVID-19 economic recovery and how the future of work can be more interlinked with digital developments.

Renew Europe welcomes historic launch of EPPO

On 1 June, the long-awaited European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) headed by Laura Kövesi was launched. The Renew Europe Group salutes this historic moment, which will improve the protection of the EU's financial interests and combat white-collar crime, with the competence to investigate and prosecute infringements of the EU budget.

Renew Europe launches first ‘Values Talk’ event with Kaja Kallas

This week, Renew Europe launched a series of ‘Values Talks’ with Renew Europe President Dacian Cioloș and leading liberal politicians from across Europe, held in the context of the Conference on the Future of Europe. The first talk was guested by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas of ALDE Party member Reformierakond, on the topic of digital.
