European liberals elect new leadership at ALDE Congress

Results are in! The ALDE Party Congress delegates have elected the team that will lead liberals to the European elections of 2024. The Congress has voted to renew the co-presidency of Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP and Senator Timmy Dooley. Delegates also voted for five new Vice-Presidents: Dániel Berg, Baroness Sal Brinton, Svenja Hahn MEP, Kira Rudik, and Annelou van Egmond. Congratulations to the new Bureau!

A thousand liberals from all over Europe participate in the ALDE Party Congress

From 2 to 4 June, European liberal leaders convened in Dublin for the first in-person ALDE Party Congress since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prime Ministers, European Commissioners, party leaders and other guests took part of the different sessions to discuss some of Europe’s most pressing challenges: sustainable energy, security and women in leadership, among others.

Historic Denmark referendum strengthens European unity

Two weeks after Finland and Sweden decided to apply for the NATO membership, 66.9% of Danes voted in favour of putting an end to their country’s opt-out from the EU security policy which was in place for almost 30 years. These major security shifts, strongly supported by European liberals, come after the unjustified and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

New liberal-left government takes office in Slovenia

Prime Minister Dr. Robert Golob’s coalition government was sworn in on 1 June after it received a vote of confidence in the National Assembly. ALDE Party member parties LMS and SAB have been invited to join the coalition government, with LMS leader Marjan Šarec confirmed as the Minister of Defence. The two parties are currently in advanced talks to merge with Golob’s Gibanje Svoboda.

Liberal mayors to assist Ukrainians at the local level

On 2 June, during the Liberal Mayors Summit at the ALDE Party Congress, 18 Mayors from 13 countries got together to discuss future actions on summer camps for Ukrainian children, twinning for refugee integration and for reconstruction of Ukrainian cities, and the EU Councillors scheme, among other topics.

Russian state lobbyists banned from European Parliament

The Renew Europe Group has successfully called on European Parliament President, Roberta Metsola, to ban Russian state lobbyists. The ban will reduce the capacity of Russia's warmongering lobbyists to influence EU politicians and policies, in a blow to Putin apologists on the far right and left of the Parliament. We call on other EU institutions to follow this move.

Minimum wages in the EU: deal ensures progress in reducing in-work poverty

On 7 June, the inter-institutional agreement for a directive on adequate minimum wages in the EU was reached. The directive establishes a framework to improve the adequacy of statutory minimum wages and promotes collective bargaining on wage formation, while respecting social partners’ autonomy and contractual freedom and the specificities of national systems and national competencies.
