The first-ever virtual ALDE Congress will take place on Friday and Saturday this week, bringing together hundreds of participants across Europe. An interesting 2-day programme will cover themes such as Europe’s economic recovery, strengthening of our democracies and Conference on the Future of Europe. Stay up to date on ALDE Party eCongress with our Congress app!

Just like in previous years, the bespoke ALDE Congress app will be your guide for the whole duration of the event. With the app, you will be able to keep track of the programme and the different sessions, find out information about our speakers, take a virtual tour of our exhibitors’ section and much more. Most importantly, from the desktop browser version you will be able to access all the links that you need to be able to view and participate in the eCongress sessions.

Liberals win in Latvian municipal elections, gain new minister

ALDE Party members Latvijas Attīstībai and Kustiba “Par!” ran in the Latvian municipal elections on 5 June, winning in total more than 90 seats at the local level. Moreover, on 3 June, leader of the alliance Attīstībai/Par! Marija Golubeva was confirmed as the new Latvian Minister of Interior. She is the second female politician to hold this particular office, and her priorities will include structural reforms in the home affairs system among others.

Liberals win in German state of Sachsen-Anhalt

On 6 June, the inhabitants of Sachsen-Anhalt in Germany went to cast their vote in the regional elections. Under the leadership of Lydia Hüskens, ALDE Party member Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP) increased its vote share and passed the 5% threshold entering the state parliament for the first time in ten years with seven seats. These elections were the last ones in Germany before the federal elections that will take place on 26 September.

Reformierakond launches local election campaign in Estonia

On 5 June, ALDE Party member Reformierakond in Estonia held its Spring General Assembly, in the run up to the country’s local elections that will take place on 17 October. During the Assembly, the party launched their election campaign with the theme ‘Paremini hoitud Eesti’ (A Better Managed Estonia). The party wants to actively campaign across Estonia in order to get involved with local communities and to foster development and innovation.

Laisvės partija holds congress, re-elects leader

Last week, ALDE Party member Laisvės Partija in Lithuania held its annual party congress to elect the party leadership for the coming two years. Incumbent party leader Aušrinė Armonaitė was elected for a second term, and new members were elected for the party board, ethics and transparency and control commissions. During the Congress the positive cooperation with ALDE members was highlighted with high-level ALDE politicians participating online.

Bright Armenia holds congress ahead of country’s snap elections

Snap parliamentary elections will take place in Armenia on 20 June. Ahead of these elections, Bright Armenia held a party congress on 23 May, during which the party’s structural bodies were re-established and re-elected. Board members of the party reaffirmed the decision to take part in the upcoming elections under the slogan ‘There is an alternative, vote!’. Party leader and MP Edmon Marukyan will lead the national list.

Jasna Gabrič: city to city diplomacy shows promise in North Macedonia

Mayor Jasna Gabrič, third Vice President of the Renew Europe Group in the European Committee of the Regions (Renew Europe CoR) and co-chair of JCC North Macedonia joined a meeting last week to discuss cooperation between different municipalities in North Macedonia. These municipalities are showing significant interest in establishing direct partnerships with cities and regions in the European Union, a development that is fully supported by Gabric.

ALDE Secretariat welcomes new HR Trainee

Earlier this week, we welcomed Chloé Geerdens to the ALDE Party Secretariat! Chloé will work as an HR Trainee, supporting the HR Manager in her daily work. Currently finishing her studies in labour sciences at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Chloé is especially driven by questions of gender and inequality and how these manifest at the workplace.

Job Vacancy: Office assistant

The ALDE Party is looking for an Office assistant to support the Finance team, carry out office management tasks, support in the organisation of statutory and non-statutory events and manage the agenda of the Secretariat among other tasks. Applications are open until 23 June.

EU Digital Covid Certificate: Renew Europe welcomes deal

On 8 June, the European Parliament voted to adopt an agreement on the EU Digital COVID Certificate regulation. The Renew Europe Group welcomes the introduction of this common system for certificates that will help re-establish free and safe movement within the EU.

Rule of Law report must be backed by action

Last week, MEPs adopted a report assessing the European Commission's Rule of Law Report for 2020. While the report maps the rule of law situation in all EU Member States, the findings must be matched by concrete legal action when necessary, stresses Renew Europe.
